How does this asset finance calculator work?

Accepted Answer

The calculator uses a standard reducing-balance amortisation formula. It takes the financed amount (asset cost minus deposit and trade-in), applies the interest rate over the term, and adjusts for any balloon or residual at the end. It is the same maths most NZ lenders use to quote indicative repayments.

What rate should I use?

For prime business borrowers on new commercial vehicles or equipment from a recognised dealer, indicative NZ asset-finance rates currently start from around 7.6% p.a. Used assets, non-standard equipment, or less-established businesses typically price 1–6 percentage points higher. The slider defaults to 9.5% as a reasonable mid-market starting point.

Does the calculator include lender fees?

No. Most NZ asset-finance lenders charge an establishment fee ($300–$1,000) and small monthly account fees ($5–$10). Dealers may charge a documentation fee. These are not included in the calculator output — your actual cost of credit will be slightly higher than the indicative figures shown.

What is a balloon or residual payment?

A balloon (or residual) is a lump sum that you pay at the end of the term, after all your regular repayments. It reduces your monthly repayment but increases the total interest you pay over the life of the finance. Balloons are common on vehicles and equipment that still have material market value at end of term.
